Although we are a small museum, we pride ourselves in being able to tackle large challenges that affect our operations and also those that affect the communities that surround us. We currently have a large number of programs either on-going or in the planning stages. The four most visible of these programs are are:
- The Captain John Smith Water Trail
- The Virginia Scenic and Historic River Program
- The National Park Service’s (NPS) American Battlefield Preservation Plan (ABPP)
- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Maritime Heritage National Marine Sanctuary
But, these are not our only programs. We are also working with the Chesapeake Bay Conservancy, Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), ReadyReef Inc., Jordan Marine, CDII Inc., Julie Ann Seafood, and other local partners on programs to examine new concepts in oyster propagation and harvesting and also on using natural methods to reduce raparian erosion that threatens land ownership and the habitats of the living creatures in our waters.
